Iron mine presentation on Sunday in Republic

REPUBLIC — The Republic Area Historical Society will present “Miners Died and Widows Cried: Death in the Iron Mines” with miner, author and historian James R. Paquette at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Republic Township Hall on Kloman Avenue in North Republic.

The “real history” of Michigan’s Iron County is not the history of mines and mining companies, it is the history of the miners themselves, largely immigrants, who came to the U.P. with their families seeking the American dream.

This presentation brings to light the truth about sacrifice, injury and death on the Marquette Iron Range at the time when “the life of mule meant more to a mine captain than the life of a miner.”
