LANSING — The American Legion Department of Michigan, the state’s largest war-time era veterans organization, elected a new state commander at the 2017 annual convention in Flint. Delegates from posts throughout Michigan cast their votes for Brett Holt of American Legion Post 439 in Saginaw.

Holt earned his eligibility in the American Legion through his service in the U.S. Navy during the Lebanon/Grenada war era. He served aboard the aircraft carriers USS America (CVA-66) and USS George Washington (CVN-73) and spent three years as a recruiter in Houston, Texas.

Holt has served the American Legion in several position at the post, district, department and national levels. Some noted positions are post commander, post adjutant, district commander and zone commander.

Commander Holt and his wife, Bonnie, have two sons and two daughters.

The American Legion Department of Michigan has more than 70,000 members in the state. The American Legion was founded in 1919 based on “The Four Pillars” — Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children and Youth — and continues above all its mission as an advocate for veterans.
