Dickinson County Great Books Club starts Sept. 11
IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Great Books Club will begin its 2017-2018 schedule of discussions at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, in the all-purpose room of the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
All meetings will be on the second Monday of each month. All interested persons are invited to participate in any one or all of the discussions.
The book for this year is “Immigrant Voices: 21st Century Stories.” This anthology is a collection of 18 short stories that showcases some of the best contemporary writers who have emerged from the waves of immigration to America.
Twenty-first century immigrant literature reflects and shapes the shifting definitions of America in an age when the world is becoming a smaller place in countless ways.
This collection of stories explores a range of differing immigrant experiences and perspectives. Each of the writers in this anthology addresses the perennial questions about society and the individual that the authors of the Great Books have pondered for decades.
Beginning Sept. 11, two of the stories will be discussed at each meeting, ending with the final meeting on May 14.
These readings, published by the Great Books Foundation, can be ordered online at greatbooks.org/immigrant voices or by phone at 1-800-222-5870.
Attendees are asked to read the selection beforehand if they wish to participate in the discussion.
