Service officer honored to be able to assist veterans

Veterans Corner

IRON MOUNTAIN — As we approach the end of 2018, I just want to take the time to reflect back on the start of 2018 and my first full year as an accredited veterans service officer for Dickinson County.

It has been a challenging year, full of highs and lows. But the most important aspect is that the Dickinson County Veterans Service Office has been there to assist many veterans in the areas regarding pensions, compensation, disability, burial claims and many other avenues of assistance.

I’m honored and humbled to have been chosen by the county to assist our veterans. I can now see that there is truly a need for this office in Dickinson County.

The VA is a complex giant divided into three major divisions: Health (comprising of the Oscar G. Johnson VAMC), Benefit and the Cemetery Division. There are so many complex laws governing the VA system that it sometimes takes a Veterans Service Officer to help navigate this complex web. It also takes continued education to better assist the veteran and his or her family. Therefore, I’m pleased that my boss has supported this office by allowing me to attend various conferences and training opportunities.

Now that we have the support of the community by passing the millage, we are now able to keep the office open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. We are continually seeing many veterans — averaging about 95 office visits a month — plus home visits and many other duties that pertain to this office.

With the loss of Larry Pascador, I’m pleased to announce the addition of Denise Formolo as an accredited veterans service officer. She has already proven to be a good asset to the office. We are both here to serve you, the veteran community.

As we approach the end of 2018, Denise and I are excited with the prospect of doing an even better job for our veterans and their families.

Please take the time to stop by the office and let us inform you what we can possibly do for you as the veteran or surviving spouse. You might be surprised to learn what you are entitled to and what you so richly deserve.

Brown and Formolo can be reached at 906-774-2820.
