Toys for Tots effort kicks off

Members of the Long Riders Motorcycle Club gathered at the annual Toys for Tots kick-off event on Oct. 6. Each year, this civic-minded motorcycle club is the first to make sure the children of Dickinson and Florence County receive toys for Christmas. Despite to cold weather, most members rode their bikes to the American Legion Hall for this event, then to Florence, Wis. They donated toys to the Dickinson County program and to St. Vincent de Paul of Florence. In addition to the toys, the club also donated $250 for the purchase of toys. Each year, the local volunteers of the Marine Corps League collects or purchases more than 1,500 toys to distribute to 400 to 500 area children. Those who would like to donate to Toys for Tots will find collection boxes begin to pop up in the area in mid-November. Any company or organization that would like to donate directly to the Marine Corps League can contact Michael Miller at toysfortots49801@gmail.com. Any family that would like to receive toys can call the local Salvation Army at 906-779-5717.
