Smith receives MAHP Bonner Award for outstanding achievement
MARQUETTE – Dennis H. Smith, the president and chief executive officer of the Upper Peninsula Health Plan, has received the 2014 Ellis J. Bonner Outstanding Achievement Award from the Michigan Association of Health Plans (MAHP).
The award is given to an MAHP member who has been nominated by his colleagues based on exemplary service, leadership, and contributions to the managed-care industry and community.
MAHP Executive Director Rick Murdock said that “Smith is the voice of one of the nation’s best Medicaid health plans and a recognized leader throughout Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. He has also been a valuable resource for me as the association has moved forward on key issues over the years.”
Smith accepted the award by saying, “I am much honored to receive this award. Being recognized by your colleagues is extremely gratifying. I am blessed to have an extremely talented, dedicated, innovative team that constantly looks for ways to make UPHP a better company. It is because of their work that we are able to provide better services to our members and providers, making the health care industry in the Upper Peninsula one of the best.”
The Upper Peninsula Health Plan is a managed-care and provider-service organization that manages medical and pharmacy care for thousands of residents living in all 15 Upper Peninsula counties. Smith has led the health plan and its affiliated companies since 2003.
The Bonner Award was created to honor the memory of Ellis James Bonner, who was a mentor, role model, and national leader in the health care industry. He inspired the managed-care community and helped it grow into a thriving industry. The award was started soon after Bonner died in 1995.
The Michigan Association of Health Plans was established to promote the interests of its member health plans. Its mission is “to provide leadership for the promotion and advocacy of high-quality, affordable, accessible health care for the citizens of Michigan.”
