IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain Road & Trail Half Marathon, hosted by First National Bank & Trust, made its fifth annual donation to the Dickinson County Cancer Loan Closet.  This year, the Sept. 10th event raised $16,000 for the Loan Closet, bringing the five year total to $53,500.

The Loan Closet is a non-profit organization that has been assisting residents of Dickinson County and Aurora, Florence, Niagara, and Spread Eagle in Wisconsin for over a decade.  They loan equipment to cancer and non-cancer clients at no cost.

They also have a financial aid program which helps with cancer prescriptions, Ensure, and incontinence supplies as well as out of town medical-related travel expenses.  The Loan Closet is operated solely by volunteers and donated monies.

The Loan Closet is at 201 East Breitung Ave. in Kingsford and can be reached at 906-776-0966.

Another goal of the Iron Mountain Road & Trail Half Marathon Committee was to ensure the set-up of an endowment fund for the Loan Closet.  This goal was achieved recently through the establishment of the fund through the Dickinson Area Community Foundation.

“The establishment of the Cancer Loan Closet Endowment Fund guarantees the future of the organization. It will provide income for the organization for generations in the future. By making a donation to the endowment fund, you are securing future income and stability for the Cancer Loan Closet. The Community Foundation is grateful to the Half Marathon Race Committee and First National Bank & Trust for their commitment to creating a lasting impact within our community by establishing the Endowment Fund for the Cancer Loan Closet,” said Tamara Juul, executive director of the Community Foundation.

Donations to the Loan Closets’ endowment fund can be sent to  DACF-Cancer Loan Closet, 333 S. Stephenson Ave., Suite 204, Iron Mountain, MI  49801. For more information on the fund, contact Juul at 906-774-3131.

“The event and donations would not be possible without the support of our very generous sponsors and community.  We wish to express heartfelt gratitude to all those who make this possible year after year,” race director Lisa Villringer added.
