Caution urged at power dams

MILWAUKEE, Wis. –We Energies is reminding people to avoid winter recreation activities on the ice surrounding its hydroelectric dams.

Changing weather conditions, including rain, sleet, and fluctuating temperatures have prevented a thick ice surface from forming near hydroelectric dams.  Even during normal weather conditions, ice formed near the facilities is often thin, inconsistent and unsafe due to strong underwater currents.

We Energies has barriers and signs posted near its dams warning of thin ice.  To ensure personal safety, We Energies asks all ice fisherman and snowmobilers to follow those warnings.  The company also asks people to stay off any river channels next to its dams.

We Energies operates 13 hydroelectric facilities on the Fox, Menominee, Brule, Michigamme, Pine and Paint rivers in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula.
