Escanaba man faces charges in traffic crash, power outage
ESCANABA — An Escanaba man who was arrested for drunken driving after he crashed his pickup into a utility pole, causing a localized power outage in Escanaba last month, was recently bound over on three charges.
Dennis John Reese, 23, was bound over from Delta County District Court to circuit court last week for possession of a contraband in jail (five-year felony), possession of marijuana (one-year misdemeanor), and driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance (93-day misdemeanor).
According to Escanaba Public Safety, Reese was westbound on 1st Avenue North when his truck struck a parked vehicle and an electric pole, causing the pickup to roll onto the driver’s side and trap him inside. The accident occurred at 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 5, a block east of North Lincoln Road.
After electric employees deactivated the power lines, Reese got out of the vehicle on his own. He refused medical care at the scene. Three nearby restaurants lost power until repairs were made the following day.
A date will be scheduled in circuit court for Reese to make a plea or set a trial. He was released from the county jail after posting a $25,000 surety bond — 10 percent of a $250,000 bond.
