MTU to host student math event April 15

HOUGHTON – The U.P. Math Championships hosted by the Michigan Tech University’s Department of Mathematical Sciences, will start at 11 a.m. Eastern time Saturday, April 15.

The contest is open to third through 12th grades.

Registration is free until April 12. After that there will be $5 charge. Free T-shirts will be guaranteed to all who enter by this Saturday.

The first round of competition will begin by 11:30 a.m. April 15 in Fisher Hall.

Students will compete as individuals and as teams of four in three categories: elementary (grades 3 to 5), middle school (6 to 8) and high school (9 to 12). Those who do not sign up with a team of four will be assigned to a team.

All tests will be age appropriate, but the material does not follow the typical school topics.

Students will take a 30- minute individual test with numerical answers, then a 30-minute team test in which everyone works to solve 10 problems, then a 30-minute team “guts” round in which each team races to complete as many problems as they can.

The top 10 to 20 individual students will compete in a championship round to decide the final individual places.

Prizes include Michigan Tech scholarships to the top individuals (high school only), laser tag, Texas Instruments calculators and trophies.

Sponsors are the MTU Department of Mathematical Sciences, OHM Advisors, GS Engineering, Respawn Laser Tag, Texas Instruments, and Art of Problem Solving

To register, or for more information, send an email to John Gershenson at jkgershe@mtu.edu with the names of the students, their school, their grades, and a choice of a youth or adult-size T-shirt.

The guts round, the championship round and the awards are open to the public. Parents or coaches need not be present throughout the competition, which will conclude at about 4 p.m.
