ATV, motorcycle crashes injure 2 in Florence County

FLORENCE, Wis. — Two men were hurt in separate motor vehicle accidents Friday in Florence County.

A man had severe head and chest injuries after an all-terrain vehicle accident about 4:42 p.m. near the Pine Flowage Dam in the town of Commonwealth, Florence County Sheriff Jeff Rickaby said.

The man had tried a hill climb in a remote gravel pit when the ATV rolled backwards over him, Rickaby said.

A deputy responded after receiving a 911 call from a cell phone but initially could not find the crash site. He began following fresh ATV tracks and located the injured man.

The Florence Rescue Squad and Beacon Ambulance took the man to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, and he was later flown to a different hospital for treatment, Rickaby said.

No update on his condition was available.

In a different incident, a 58-year-old Felch Township man had minor injuries when he lost control of a borrowed motorcycle he was driving about 5:44 p.m. and crashed on Central Avenue in Florence, Rickaby said.

Deputies arrested him for operating while intoxicated-second offense and failing to keep his vehicle under control. He did not have a valid motorcycle endorsement, Rickaby said.
