Child injured in UTV crash

MARQUETTE — A five year-old received non-life threatening injuries while riding on the lap of a passenger in an Utility Task Vehicle that rolled over Saturday at 5 p.m. near County Road 426 in Wells Township.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded to the personal injury crash. Deputies said that the UTV, driven by a 21 year-old male from Sobieski, Wis., attempted to turn around on County Road SN to head back to County Road 426.

And while making the turn, the UTV rolled onto its right side, deputies said. A 21 year-old female from Oconto Falls, Wis. was sitting in the front seat while holding the five year-old on her lap at the time of the crash.

The child, who was from Sobieski, was transported to U.P. Health Systems Marquette Hospital by Forsyth Township EMS.

All passengers were wearing safety belts, but the child was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The driver was cited for careless operation of an ORV and for transporting passengers when the ORV is not designed for it that way.

The accident remains under investigation, but alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, deputies said.
