IM man sentenced in Breitung crash

Three injured in Christmas Eve accident

Rodney Buck

IRON MOUNTAIN — An Iron Mountain man involved in a Christmas Eve crash at U.S. 141 and Breitung Cutoff Road was sentenced Tuesday to 25 days in jail and six months of probation.

Rodney Lorne Buck, 58, had pleaded no contest in Dickinson County District Court to misdemeanor charges of operating with the presence of a controlled substance and use of marijuana.

Buck told Judge Christopher Ninomiya he understood the risk his behavior created and assured the judge he doesn’t have a marijuana habit.

Buck attempted to turn left from U.S. 141 to Lincoln Avenue on Dec. 24 when his vehicle collided with a northbound vehicle on U.S. 141 occupied by a 60-year-old Channing woman and 62-year-old Channing man, according to a Michigan State Police press release.

The Channing couple went to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital for minor injuries, while Buck’s passenger, a 50-year-old Iron Mountain woman, went to the hospital for treatment of a possible neck injury, troopers said. Buck was not hurt, they added.

Buck reportedly told troopers he smoked a “bowl” after they detected an odor of marijuana, according to the criminal complaint. He performed poorly on field sobriety tests, troopers said, and gave them a suspected marijuana cigarette, the complaint states.
