IMHS names top seniors in class of 2017

IRON MOUNTAIN — Seven seniors from Iron Mountain High School have been named to the academic top 10 percent of their graduating class, school officials announced.

Included in the top 10 percent is Tysen J. Wadge, valedictorian, with an exemplary academic record — a 4.0 grade point average.

He is the son of Jodi and Greg Wadge of Iron Mountain. Wadge is a two-year member of the Iron Mountain High School Honor Society, has earned a place on the IMHS Honor Roll for seven consecutive semesters, an invitation to the Honors Celebration for the past four years and was awarded the Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award.

He has participated in Key Club, Varsity Club and student council while at Iron Mountain High School. He has been named the IMHS Student of the Month and recently earned the Air Force Recruiting Math and Science Award, MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award, the President’s Education Award and the Senior Mathematics Departmental Award.

He has also participated in soccer, hockey, golf and tennis, earning the U.P. Division II Tennis Player of the Year title. Outside of school, he has worked part-time, volunteers and enjoys disc golf.

Wadge has chosen to attend Michigan State University, pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering.

The salutatorian of the class is Trent A. Juul, the son of Tamara and Steve Juul of Iron Mountain.

Juul is also a two-year

member of the Iron Mountain High School Honor Society, has earned a place on the IMHS Honor Roll for seven consecutive semesters, an invitation to the Honors Celebration for the past four years and has also earned the Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award.

He currently serves as the Key Club president, student council vice-president and is a board representative for the Youth Advisory Committee.

He was named the IMHS Math Student of the Month, awarded the U.S. Air Force Recruiting Math and Science Award, and was nominated as our DAR Good Citizen. Recently, Juul also received the American Legion Best All School Boy Citizen Award, the MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award, the President’s Education Award and the Senior Mathematics Departmental Award. He has also participated in football, tennis, hockey and golf.

Outside of the classroom, Juul serves as a youth referee for hockey, football and baseball.

This fall, he will attend the University of Michigan, pursuing a civil engineering degree.

Antoinette L. DeMerse is the daughter of Maria and Jeff DeMerse of Iron Mountain. She is a two-year member of the Iron Mountain High School Honor Society, has earned a place on the IMHS Honor Roll for seven consecutive semesters, an invitation to the Honors Celebration for the past four years and awarded the Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award.

DeMerse currently serves as the class president and Band Council president. She has participated in band, swim team, Key Club, Varsity Club, Spanish Club, student council and Band Council. She has also taken part in the AAUW Speech Contest and the Collective Bargaining Workshop.

She has earned countless swimming awards, serving as team captain and has also earned a Volunteer Achievement Award. She was recently awarded the Bruce Spigarelli Senior Citizenship Award, an MHSAA Scholar Athlete Award, President’s Education Award and the Senior English Departmental Award. Outside of the classroom, DeMerse participates in community theater, and volunteers at the hospital and assisted living facility. She also works as certified lifeguard.

Upon graduation, DeMerse will be attending the University of Michigan, pursuing a pre-medicine course of study.

Paige A. Fortner is the daughter of Laura and Kirk Fortner of Breitung Township. Paige is a two-year member of the Iron Mountain High School Honor Society, has earned a place on the IMHS Honor Roll for seven consecutive semesters, along with an invitation to the Honors Celebration for the past four years. She has participated in Key Club, Youth Advisory Committee, student council, Science Olympiad, HOSA, Varsity Club, Spanish Club, Tri-Hi-Y and currently serves as vice-president of the senior class.

Fortner has also earned the Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award, the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, MTU Society of Women Engineers Certificate of Merit and IMHS Student of the Week. She also represented IMHS as a Girls’ State Delegate in her junior year. Recently, she was awarded the Air Force Recruiting Math and Science Award, YAC Award, President’s Education Award, MSSA Volunteer Award for accumulating 400 hours of community service, the Senior Social Studies Departmental Award, along with the Senior Science Departmental Award. While at IMHS, she was actively involved in basketball, volleyball and softball. Outside of school, Fortner works part-time, volunteers and enjoys time with family and friends.

She will be attending St. Norbert College in the fall, pursuing a nursing degree.

Grace L. Hansen is the daughter of Shannon and Jesse Hansen of Iron Mountain. During her career at Iron Mountain High School, Hansen has earned a place on the IMHS Honor Roll for seven consecutive semesters, along with an invitation to the Honors Celebration for the past four years. She is a two-year member of the Iron Mountain High School Honor Society and has also been awarded an Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award. Hansen has participated in tennis, Key Club, Tri-Hi-Y, Art Club and Drama Club. She has also competed at Solo Ensemble for two years. Outside of the classroom, she is active in her church and also works part-time.

Upon graduation, Hansen will start out at Bay West with plans of transferring to Western Michigan University, pursing a degree in journalism.

Marissa L. Klarich is the daughter of Kim and Ken Klarich of Iron Mountain.

She is a two-year member of the Iron Mountain High School Honor Society, has earned a place on the IMHS Honor Roll for seven consecutive semesters, along with an invitation to the Honors Celebration for the past four years. She has been awarded an Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award, named IMHS Student of the Week, IMHS Math Student of the Month and the Dickinson-Iron Technical Center Student Award.

While at IMHS, Klarich has participated in varsity soccer being named MVP in 2016, Art Club, Key Club and Yearbook Club. She recently was awarded the Michigan Student Service Award for her volunteer efforts. She has been a newspaper carrier for nine years (Advertiser) and the Daily News for two years. She is active in her church, enjoys photography, traveling, reading and writing, drawing and painting.

This fall Klarich will be attending Ferris State University and is enrolled in the music industry management program.

Carson P. Wonders is the son of Julie and Matt Wonders of Iron Mountain.

Wonders is a two-year member of the Iron Mountain High School Honor Society, has earned a place on the IMHS Honor Roll for seven consecutive semesters, along with an invitation to the Honors Celebration for the past four years. He has been awarded an Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award and the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. He currently serves as the student council president is a member of Varsity Club and HOSA.

He is a three-sport athlete having participated in basketball, football and tennis. He was named to the U.P. Dream Team and named the ABC Player of the Year in basketball. Carson was recently awarded the U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award, MHSAA Scholar Athlete Award and the President’s Education Award.

Wonders enjoys hunting and fishing and also holds down a part-time job. He is an outstanding athlete who will be joining the NMU Wildcat basketball team at Northern Michigan University, while pursuing a pre-medicine course of study.
