Project on US 141 nearly done in Niagara
NIAGARA, Wis. — Work will soon wrap up on Niagara’s utility upgrade project on U.S. 141.
Crews have about 90 percent of new water and sewer pipes in the ground, and should have the rest done in the next two weeks, project engineer Thad Majkowski said.
After that, workers will spend two to three weeks restoring the road, driveways and landscape ahead of the estimated completion date of June 25.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will then come through in 2019 to repave the highway.
The city was required to conduct a public hearing Thursday on the project’s progress, but no one offered any comments.
The $2.653 million project began in August 2016 to replace undersized water mains, some of which were more than 100 years old, and leaky sewer mains, Majkowski said.
Improving the infrastructure also could lead to business growth in the area of U.S. 141 from Vine Street to Pine Street, he added.
The city received a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant and $2.153 million in U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development grants and low-interest loans to pay for the project.
Jake’s Excavating and Landscaping of Ironwood is the contractor for the water and sewer main work, while Dorner Inc. of Luxembourg, Wis., installed a new lift station.
