Riding the rails again

Train enthusiasts waited for hours earlier this week to get a glimpse of an Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad excursion passenger train that passed through the area. The train stopped in Pembine, Wis., to change tracks and then pulled up near the Breitung Township Fire Department to replenish the water supply before traveling though Channing on its way to Mass City.

A couple of the vintage passenger cars are believed to be from the early 1900s, area train experts said. An excursion train occasionally will come through the area — the Art Train and Christmas Train are examples — but passenger trains have not operated in the area since the 1960s.
