QUINNESEC — Three area fire departments were needed to extinguish a fire in a pile of shredded tires Wednesday morning at the Niagara Development landfill off Kimberly Road in Quinnesec.

Someone accidentally dumped hot material in the tire pile about 9:55 a.m., igniting the blaze, Breitung Township Fire Chief Jeff Iverson said.

Breitung firefighters weren’t concerned about the fire spreading, Iverson explained, as the pile was out in the middle of a field. However, they did request help from Norway and Niagara firefighters to provide extra water, Iverson said.

Firefighters left the area about 1 p.m., but Iverson said Niagara Development personnel remained to bury the pile and extinguish any remaining fire.

No one was hurt in the incident.
