Sturm receives DAR Good Citizen Award


KINGSFORD — Kingsford High School senior Joseph Sturm, has been selected by his classmates as this year’s National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Representative for the Onagomingkway Chapter.

He is the son of Christopher and Susan Sturm of Kingsford.

The DAR Good Citizenship Award is presented to one student based on the qualities of dependability –truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality; service — cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others; leadership — personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility; and patriotism — unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation.

Sturm is ranked top in his senior class and is a National Merit Semifinalist. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, KHS Student Council and currently serves as treasurer; and has served as president of his junior and senior classes.

In addition, he has participated in track, tennis, and cross country, where he received the MVP award. Sturm is also a member of the Environmental Club, Key Club, Yearbook, Quiz Bowl, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is a member of Business Professionals of American where he received many awards in competitions at the regional and state levels and qualified for national competition.

He was named Kingsford High School’s AP Student of the Month for AP Calculus, AP U.S .History, and AP Chemistry. Joe has compiled more than 200 hours of community service and is actively involved in leadership roles in KHS band programs.

He was elected to attend the MYLead Leadership Conference at Michigan State University as a sophomore. He also received the Air Force Math and Science Award and the Lawrence Tech Math and Science Scholarship.

“Joseph Sturm is an outstanding example of the qualities that the DAR citizenship award is based on, the personal qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in both his school and community,” stated Lyle Smithson, principal of Kingsford High School.

“Joe has been recognized at Kingsford High school by both the teaching staff and his peers for possessing all of these qualities to a very high degree.  We at Kingsford High School are extremely proud of Joe and all of his accomplishments and the high quality young man he is.  We are very proud and honored to recognize him as our 2017 DAR Good Citizenship representative,” Smithson added.

After graduation from Kingsford High School, he plans to attend college in the fall of 2018 and pursue a degree in either business and finance or secondary education.
