Escanaba bridge span to open

WELLS — Traffic on the U.S. 2 and 41 bridge over the Escanaba River will be switched onto the bridge’s newly-constructed westbound span on Saturday, Dec. 9, the Michigan Department of Transportation announced. The traffic reconfiguration is expected to start at 1 p.m. Eastern time that day.

This reconfiguration will begin with the movement of westbound traffic onto the new bridge span. After a temporary barrier wall is placed, eastbound traffic will be switched onto the new span, with one lane open in each direction.

According to MDOT, the switch will allow for the demolition and reconstruction of the existing eastbound span this winter. MDOT will work with the Delta County Road Commission to implement a strategic winter maintenance plan to respond to winter weather and maintain safety in the construction zone for the bridge project in the coming months.

While the new westbound span is wider than the existing eastbound span, vehicles in the construction zone will be restricted to 12 feet in width and over-width loads will continue to be prohibited. Drivers with oversized loads are encouraged to contact the DCRC at 906-786-3200 Monday through Thursday to determine an appropriate alternate route.
