Freezing rain prompts schools in region to cancel classes

IRON MOUNTAIN — Most area school districts cancelled classes today in anticipation of morning rain freezing that was to extend into the afternoon, causing potentially hazardous conditions on the roads.

All districts in Dickinson and Iron counties were closed, as well as some northern Marinette County districts.

The National Weather Service predicted rain would turn to freezing rain and then snow by early afternoon.

Snow totals were expected to be only about an inch in northern Marinette and southern Dickinson counties, 1 to 2 inches in northern Dickinson County, about 2 inches in Florence County and 1 to 3 inches in Iron County, according to NWS.

NWS predicted conditions will be worse to the northwest, with Gogebic, Ontonagon, Houghton and Keweenaw counties under a winter storm warning for 5 to 9 inches of snow.
