Michaud again leads IM board
IRON MOUNTAIN – Jeff Michaud was re-elected this week as president of the Iron Mountain School Board.
Michaud retained the post on a 4-3 vote over Rob Langsford, who was tapped to remain vice president. Steve Brooks and Lisa Basanese were re-elected as treasurer and secretary, respectively.
In other business, the board;
— Will allow the North Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization to use the district’s non-profit status to apply for a grant for new playground equipment at North Elementary. The equipment would be designed to accommodate the school’s younger children, a PTO spokesperson said.
— Heard from Brooks the district’s fund balance now is $186,000 in the black. This is partially due to a higher number of full time equivalent students than was anticipated in the 2017-18 budget.
— Heard from Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Schools Director Julie Wonders that they are looking at a new junior high basketball program. School athletic directors still would be used in individual schools, but the community schools would oversee the league and help fund coaches and officials, which would benefit schools financially. The junior high basketball program is not a Michigan High School Athletic Association program.
