Dickinson’s jobless rate lowest in UP

IRON MOUNTAIN — Seasonal job declines pushed the Upper Peninsula’s unemployment rate to 7.7 percent in January, significantly higher than both the state rate of 5.3 percent and the national rate of 4.5 percent.

Dickinson County, however, had the lowest jobless rate in the region at 5.2 percent. Iron County’s unemployment rate in January was 8.2 percent.

“Over the year, the Upper Peninsula unemployment rate declined by 0.6 percentage points, slightly more the the 0.4 percentage point decrease statewide but equal to the decline nationally,” said Bruce Weaver, an analyst with the Michigan Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives.

“Since January 2017, jobless rates moved lower in every county except Iron, which remained unchanged,” he added.

Dickinson County’s civilian labor force totaled 12,500 in January, with 650 workers unemployed. Iron County showed a civilian labor force of 5,250, including 425 who were out of work.

The jobless rate in Dickinson County was up by 0.2 percentage points from December, while Iron County’s rate climbed by 0.9 percentage points.

Rate hikes were due to the typical January job declines in seasonal industry sectors, such as construction, accommodation and food services, Weaver said.

“Mackinac County had the highest jobless rate in Michigan in January at 21.6 percent,” he said.

Above regional average jobless rates also occurred in Schoolcraft, 11.3 percent; Alger, 10.4 percent. Chippewa, 9.7 percent; Ontonagon, 9.2 percent; and Keweenaw, 8.4 percent.

Menominee County had the second-lowest unemployment rate in the U.P. at 5.7 percent, followed by Gogebic at 5.9 percent.
