Felch Township receives tire grant

FELCH — The township should be able to take in used tires for disposal later this year after being approved for a $4,000 grant by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

The DEQ stressed that Felch should wait until a signed agreement is in place before beginning to accept tires, Supervisor Robert Mattson told the Felch Township Board on Monday.

The township will let residents know once the arrangement is in place, Mattson said, adding, “I hope we have $4,000 worth of old tires.”

Felch Township looked into the program after Iron Mountain and Breitung Township each received a $4,000 DEQ Scrap Tire Cleanup grants in 2017 to dispose of scrap tires at no cost, in that case through Great American Disposal. Other Dickinson County communities also have been approved for the grants this year.

The township Monday also set a budget workshop for 6 p.m. March 20 and its Truth in Taxation hearing for 6 p.m. March 26.

Felch Township also will have its annual audit at 9 a.m. May 3.
