Norway City Band prepares for another season of performances

NORWAY — The Norway City Band is gearing up for another season of performances.

This will be the band’s 137th season as it keeps hold of its title as the longest continually meeting municipal band in the state.

The band has continually provided entertainment and enjoyment for the citizens of Norway and surrounding areas every summer since 1882. Over the years it has traveled around the U.P. to be in many parades and special events.

Last year, over 60 musicians from near and far, high schoolers to 90 somethings, participated in six concerts, three parades, a picnic, and Memorial Day cemetery services.

“I am looking forward to another great season for the Norway City Band,” said Director Ed McBroom. “The band is a great opportunity for musicians to hone their talents while helping to strengthen our communities.”

This will be the third full year under McBroom’s direction. He adds, “We still have room for more members so please come to our next rehearsal or contact me if you’re interested. We try to work with people’s summer schedules and keep things fun for everyone.”

The band’s first performance will be during the Norway Memorial Day Parade and cemetery services. Rehearsals begin tonight in the basement of the Norway City Hall at 6:30.

Concerts begin on June 5, at the Norway Band Shell at 7:30 p.m., and then rehearsals and concerts alternate weeks throughout the summer.

The band will have a special concert after the parade on the Fourth of July, make an appearance at the annual Lions Picnic at Marion Park, and have one of its regular Tuesday concerts in July at the Jake Menghini Museum.

“I’m planning for some fun, interesting new musical selections for the band this year, along with our traditional fare of marches, polkas, and classic band numbers. I’m also hoping to do a Christmas In July concert,” said McBroom.
