HOUGHTON – Heavy rains have caused substantial flash flooding throughout the Copper Country that closed roadways, damaged homes and shuttered businesses, police and other emergency personnel reported Sunday.

As much as 7 inches of rain fell in some areas, causing more than 60 sinkholes, washing out roads and making others impassable in southern and central Houghton County. A Flash Flood Emergency has been declared for the area.

“Right now, I think everybody should be safe and help each other,” Houghton City Manager Eric Waara said. “This is what a natural disaster looks like.”

It’s unclear how much damage the region had sustained, as the authorities were still assessing. Also unclear is whether there were any deaths or injuries related to the flooding.

Several roads have been shut down by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
