Teens killed in Florence County crash

FLORENCE, Wis. — Two students from Florence High School were killed in a motor vehicle crash Friday morning on County Highway N in the town of Commonwealth, said David Gribble, Florence County chief deputy.

The northbound vehicle failed to negotiate a corner about a mile north of Power Dam Road, crossed the centerline and hit a tree, bursting into flames upon impact, Gribble said. The crash was reported by a passerby at 6:21 a.m.

Names of the victims were not yet being released.

School staff and counselors will be available for students beginning at 9 a.m. today at Florence High School. Please check in upon entering the grand staircase at the front entrance of the 1930s building, school officials said.

Assisting at the scene were the Homestead Fire Department, Florence Fire Department, Aurora-Homestead Rescue Squad and Beacon Ambulance.

The Wisconsin State Patrol was on scene to do a crash reconstruction.
