New trooper at Iron Mountain State Police Post

COLE TARDIFF

IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain’s Michigan State Police Post gained a new trooper — Cole Tardiff of Gladstone — after the recent graduation of the 134th Trooper Recruit School.

Tardiff will begin his 17-week field training officer program July 23.

“We are happy to have him join the team at the Iron Mountain Post,” Post Commander F/Lt. Paul Campbell said.

Elsewhere in the Upper Peninsula, Roger Bahrman of Skandia and Collin Hinman of Menominee will join the Gladstone post; Jared Wells of Gwinn will join the Negaunee post, James Rohrer of West Branch, Mich., will join the Wakefield post; Nicholas Miller of Gwinn will join the Calumet post; Hunter Plesscher of Sault Ste. Marie and Weston Williams of Saginaw, Mich., will join the St. Ignace post; and Rachel Olesen of Traverse City, Mich., will join the Sault Ste. Marie post.

The 134th Trooper Recruit School began Jan. 14 with 152 prospective troopers. Only 107 made it through the 26-week academy that includes training in firearms, water safety, defensive tactics, patrol techniques, report writing, ethics, cultural diversity and implicit bias, first aid, criminal law, crime scene processing and precision driving.

They also volunteered at Angel House and the Lansing Rescue Mission as part of MSP’s commitment to community outreach and service.

MSP now has 1,269 troopers assigned statewide. All recruit school applicants have to pass a stringent selection process, including a physical fitness test, background investigation and hiring interview.

MSP actively is recruiting for the next school anticipated to begin in September. Interested candidates can go to www.michigan.gov/mspjobs for more information.
