Florence County adjusts metal mining ordinance

FLORENCE, Wis. — The Florence County Board on Tuesday approved amendments to the county’s zoning ordinance regarding metallic mineral mining in order to be in compliance with new state laws.

No company is looking at metallic mining in Florence County now, Board Chairwoman Jeanette Bomberg said, but the county should have an ordinance in place in case someone does apply for a mining operation. The county needs to make sure both the land and the miners’ rights are protected, she added.

In other business, the board:

— Gave Bomberg permission to approach Florence School District Administrator Ben Niehaus about pursuing a federal program that would provide free lunches to all Florence students.
