Two killed in separate Marinette County accidents

MARINETTE, Wis. — Two men died Monday in separate motor vehicle accidents in Marinette County: a one-vehicle crash in the town of Porterfield, Wis., and a side-by-side all-terrain vehicle rollover in the town of Silver Cliff, Wis., the Marinette County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Names were not released as of press time today. However, the victim in the Porterfield accident was described as a white man in his mid-20s who was believed to be residing in Crivitz, Wis. The Silver Cliff victim was identified as a 22-year-old man from Crandon, Wis., according to a news release from Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve.

In the Porterfield incident, authorities believe the driver was traveling north on State Highway 180 near Nettleton Road about 2:46 a.m. when his vehicle went onto the shoulder of the road before veering left across the highway and hitting some trees beyond the ditch line, Sauve said.

Marinette County Coroner George Smith pronounced the driver dead at the accident site.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation, Sauve said.

Grover-Porterfield firefighters, Marinette Emergency Rescue and Bay Area Medical Paramedics assisted deputies.

In the Silver Cliff incident, the driver was traveling east on a trail that runs parallel to County Road C between County Road I and Parkway Road about 3:46 p.m. when his ATV flipped over on a driveway, Sauve said.

The driver, who wasn’t wearing a helmet or a seat belt, had head and other injuries after being ejected from the ATV, Sauve said. Smith also pronounced him dead at the accident site, Sauve added.

A male passenger in the ATV was wearing a seat belt and had no injuries, Sauve said.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Silver Cliff firefighters and the Silver Cliff Rescue Squad assisted deputies on the ATV incident.
