Breitung considers 2019 road projects

QUINNESEC — Breitung Township expects to finalize its list of paving projects for 2019 at its upcoming meeting Oct. 22.

A list of potential paving projects for consideration was distributed at a recent township board meeting and remains under review.

In other action, the board:

— Accepted the resignation of Steven Gonzales from the Breitung Township Fire Department. Firefighter recruitment efforts are ongoing and new applications are being reviewed, said John Gaudette, township superintendent.

— Approved a resolution to exempt the township from the requirements of Public Act 152 for 2019. This state law provides certain thresholds to limit the costs of providing health care insurance to public sector employees. “Although the township board has begun the process of gradually increasing the health insurance participants’ portion of premium cost share, we will not reach the mandated levels,” Gaudette said.

— Agreed to waive the bidding process and accept a $11,850 proposal from Midwest Asphalt and Gravel for paving Maple Street as part of the West Breitung meter pit upgrade, a cooperative project with the city of Kingsford. Although still on the work list for October, this may be delayed due to weather issues. Paving will be paid from the general fund roads budget.

— Approved a motion approving a leave of absence request for public works employee Jeff Iverson, as of Nov. 1, 2018, with all benefits except health insurance being discontinued. Health insurance will continue through Dec. 31, at which time Iverson’s employment with the Department of Public Works will be completed. The leave of absence is in conjunction with a work related injury.
