County, school boards on Dickinson ballot

Local elections on Tuesday’s ballot in Dickinson County will include contested races for the county board.

Incumbent Republican commissioners will be challenged by Democrats in four districts, with incumbent Democrat John Degenaer Jr. running unopposed in District 5.

The contested races are —

— District 1: Republican Joe Stevens and Democrat R. Douglas Stock.

— District 2: Republican Ann Martin and Democrat Kevin Pirlot.

— District 3: Republican Barbara Kramer and Democrat Dale Alessandrini.

— District 4: Republican Henry Wender and Democrat Geno Alessandrini Jr.

Voters countywide will be asked to approve a new millage for the Dickinson Conservation District. The proposed levy is 0.1 mills, or 10 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, for a period of five years. If approved, the millage would raise an estimated $89,000 for Conservation District programs in its first year.

School board elections will be held across the county, including contested races in the Iron Mountain and Norway-Vulcan districts.

There are three candidates for two six-year terms on the Iron Mountain School Board. The candidates are Jeffrey R. Porier and incumbents Lisa Basanese and Robert Langsford. There are no candidates on the ballot for a partial term ending Dec. 31, 2020.

Four candidates, none of them incumbents, will vie for three seats on the Norway-Vulcan Area School Board. Competing for the four-year terms are Brady Gustafson, Joseph Rake, Mark J. Rietveld and Janice Van Gasse.

There are two candidates for a pair of six-year terms on North Dickinson School Board. Lynn Oman, an incumbent, and Victoria Webb are running unopposed.

The Breitung Township School District has three incumbents running unopposed for four-year terms on the school board. They are David Kashian, Kate Thomas and Joanne To.

Elsewhere, several candidates are unopposed for township positions, all of which are partial terms ending Nov. 20, 2020. They are —

— Breitung Township: Brent Johnson, incumbent Republican, for trustee.

— Sagola Township: Rita J. Rotter, incumbent Republican, for treasurer.

— West Branch Township: Jennifer Oman, incumbent Democrat, for supervisor; and Cheryl R. Peacock, Republican, for trustee.
