KINGSFORD — Eight apartments in a 12-unit complex on Grant Street sustained heavy damage in a fire early today, but all residents were able to evacuate safely, authorities said.

A Kingsford Public Safety Department officer required treatment for smoke inhalation, but otherwise there were no injuries.

Summit View Apartments residents reported the fire at 1:35 a.m. Flames were coming through the roof at 430 Grant St. when firefighters arrived, Lt. Joe Menghini said.

Neighbors and law enforcement officers helped make sure the apartments were cleared, Menghini said.

It’s believed that two of the eight damaged apartments were unoccupied.

Iron Mountain Fire Department brought its ladder truck and full crews were at the site for several hours. At least two firefighters remained this morning for observation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and KPS was expected to release further details today.
