Breitung Township to add office software, take bids for pickup

QUINNESEC — The Breitung Township Board on Monday approved buying software licensing that will allow staff members to remotely access their workstation computers from another location.

Breitung Township employees have used the free version of the remote access software TeamViewer for a number of years now, Township Superintendent John Gaudette said.

But “the free version has some security concerns to it,” Gaudette said, adding the program also has fewer features than its paid counterpart.

The board debated on which version of the software to buy, ultimately deciding on the basic subscription, which for $49.99 a month allows one user to access a workstation computer at a given time.

While they opted to start with the single subscription, the board also set aside $1,188 to cover a $99 a month subscription for three users if needed.

It would “certainly be useful if you couldn’t be in the office,” Trustee Aaron Rochon said.

In other news, the board also:

— Authorized $115 to register Bill Bailey for the 70th annual Upper Peninsula Water Works Institute in Harris, Michigan, on April 16 and 17.

— Requested bids for a full-size pickup truck, with a due date of 4 p.m. March 11. Department of Public Works Superintendent Guy Forstrom will develop bid specifications and was given permission to search for a bucket truck to purchase as well.

— Created a Technology Committee and appointed Trustee Brent Johnson and Treasurer Carol Taylor to it.

— Approved cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator certification training for the Breitung Township Fire Department for no more than $10 per certificate.
