IRON MOUNTAIN — A 15-year-old male is in custody after a shooting that wounded a teen girl just before noon Thursday at a house in the 400 block of West Brown Street.

The 16-year-old girl was taken to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital after being shot in the abdomen about 11:58 a.m., according to a written statement by Edwin Mattson, director of police and fire services for Iron Mountain.

She later was flown to a hospital in Green Bay, Wis., for treatment.

The 15-year-old male is at the Bay Pines Detention Center in Escanaba pending further court action while Iron Mountain Police continue their investigation, Mattson stated in a release.

No additional information was provided.

Earlier in the day, Iron Mountain Police said the public was not believed to have been in danger.

But early, unofficial reports of the shooting fueled a flurry of text messages that incorrectly claimed the shooting had happened at Iron Mountain High School.
