George A. Tinti

NORWAY– George A. Tinti, 81, of Norway, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016, at Maryhill Manor in Niagara, Wis.

He was born on March 7, 1935 in Norway, the son of the late Americo and Elizabeth (Smith) Tinti.

George graduated from Norway High School in 1953. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1954 to 1956, returned to study at Michigan State University and received his bachelor’s degree in 1959, going on to the Institute of Pulp and Paper Chemistry where he received his master’s degree in 1961.

George married Joan Y. Hayes on Sept. 20, 1955, at Fort Belvoir in Virginia.

He started working for Kimberly Clark in Munising and moved to the Niagara Paper Mill in 1964, where he stayed until his retirement in 1997.

George was a member of St. Marys Church in Norway, an avid marathon runner who competed in marathons all across the Midwest, multiple Boston Marathons, and in his travels, competed in Finland. He was the race director for the Norway Spring Classic for many years.

He enjoyed the outdoors, the forest and trees, traveling with Joan, an avid MSU alumni and fan and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

George is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan; sons, Steven (Debra) Tinti of Crystal Falls, Daniel Tinti of Iron Mountain, and David Tinti of Norway; daughter, Kathryn (Brian) St. Germain of Marquette; grandchildren, Melissa, Christopher and Jason Tinti, and Amanda St. Germain; brother, Lawrence (Susan) Tinti of Norway; sister, Margaret (Lee) Meneghini of Norway; sister-in-law, Janice Tinti; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ernest Tinti.

Private family services will be held.

Interment will be held at the Norway Township Cemetery.
