Robert Kegel

KINGSFORD — Robert K. “Bob” Kegel, 96, of Kingsford, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, at the Oscar G. Johnson V.A. Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

He was born on Jan. 9, 1921, in Minneapolis, the son of the late John and Sadie (Anderson) Kegel. He graduated from Edison High School in 1939.

Bob served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-1945. After his honorable discharge, he started work at the Wood Veterans Hospital in Milwaukee. While in Milwaukee he met Arlene Heese at a dance. The couple was married on Aug. 27, 1948, in Milwaukee.

In 1950, Bob was transferred to the V.A. Hospital in Iron Mountain where he worked in the kitchen for 49 years, retiring in 1979. After his retirement, he continued his passion for gardening and dancing, which he continued to do until he was 95.

He was known as Dancing Bob at the Friday night dances at both the Norway and Crystal Lake senior centers. Bob was a member of First Lutheran Church.

After Arlene’s death in 1988, he began volunteering at Crystal Lake Senior Center, driving the bus for the Green Thumb Program. When he could no longer drive the bus, he volunteered in the kitchen at the senior center until his retirement from volunteer service in the spring of 2016.

Bob is survived by two daughters, Sharon Bordui of Detroit, and Sue (Darryl) Lee of Spread Eagle, Wis.; one sister, Anita Saline of Duluth, Minn.; two grandchildren, Allen Bordui Jr. and his daughter Madison, and Michelle and John Skorvanko and their children Bonnie and Korey; four step-grandchildren, Tony Lee and his family, Sheila (Al) Burke and their children Nathan and Ashlee, Tanya Lee and her family, and Jim (Carrie) Lee and their children Michael and Makaila; numerous great-great grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Nancy; one brother, Jack Kegel; one son-in-law, Allen Bordui Sr.; and two brothers-in-law, Marvin Saline and Ralph Heese.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Oscar G. Johnson V.A. Medical Center CLC Unit for the wonderful and compassionate care they gave to Bob.

Funeral services will be announced and held in the spring.
