JOHN PERLA SR.

IRON MOUNTAIN — John P. Perla Sr., 96, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Serenity Villa Assisted Living facility in Slinger, Wis.

John was born on Sept. 19, 1920, in Hermansville, He was the son of the late Nick and Lucille (Kobe) Perla of Kingsford. He graduated from Kingsford High School and attended Northern Michigan University. He was a proud graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., where he earned a degree in business administration.

John was preceded in death by his wife of more than 65 years, Maryann (Toretta) Perla.

John enlisted in the Navy during World War II and along with his four brothers, all five Perla boys served their country at the same time during this war.

John had a long career in the banking industry and retired from the Commercial Bank & Trust Co in 1984 as a vice president-cashier. He spent his retirement years serving as a volunteer in many local charities, but was most proud of his continued service to the Iron Mountain VA Medical Center until he was 90 years-old.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his seven siblings, Nick, Pete, Frank, twin brother Joe, Anna, Fannie and Mary.

John is survived by a son, John Paul (Gail) Perla Jr. of New Berlin, Wis.; two granddaughters, Heather (Jason) DeGuelle of St Louis Park, Minn., and Kimberly Perla of Minneapolis; and a number of nieces and nephews.

To honor John’s wishes, private services were held, followed by burial at Iron Mountain Cemetery Park.

John’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to those caregivers at Serenity Villa in Slinger, and Horizon Home Care & Hospice for the wonderful and loving care he received in the last months of his life.

Special thanks to the Terwilliger and Lehto families for all their help in assisting John and expressing their love and support for him.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home and Cremation Services with the arrangements for John’s services.
