Lawrence Butsic

GREENVILLE, Mich. — Lawrence Andrew Butsic, 64, of Greenville, passed away April 18, 2017, at the Meijer Heart Center in Grand Rapids, surrounded by his loving wife Cindy and other close family.

Larry was born Dec. 8, 1952, to Joyce and Andrew Butsic. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1971. He then served in the Armed Forces Red Eye Missile program and was stationed near Babenhausen, Germany.

He married Cynthia Larsen June 9, 1973, at St. Marys Church in Norway. Larry enrolled at Ferris State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business management with a minor in accounting. Larry was vice president with InterWorld Engineering, where he enjoyed extended business trips to China. Prior to retiring, he was division manager with Mid-Michigan Cellular.

Larry was a man who lived and worked downstate, but whose heart remained in the U.P. His visits were a source of joy for him and all who loved him.

Larry’s cooking skills were legendary, especially his homemade pasta and sauce. He also shared his famous homemade Cherry Bounce at Thanksgiving.

Cindy’s family fondly called Larry “Freddie,” distinguishing him from brother-in-law Larry Larsen and nephew Larry Larsen. His favorite pastimes were cribbage, bean bag toss, hunting, fishing, and watching sports. Larry was a loyal Detroit Lions and Tigers fan. A highlight of Larry’s life was a trip to Alaska in 2016 with his brothers, Bill and Dave. They celebrated the solstice by watching the sun never set, witnessed the beauty of Denali — seeing caribou, moose and grizzlies, enjoyed seafood in Homer and Seward and a few midnight sun brewskies.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, Andrew; paternal grandparents, Jacob and Gunda Butsic; maternal grandparents, John and Letha Kanska; aunts, Edna (Charles) Nash, Bette (Ted) Hallman, and Norma (John) Price; uncles, Herald (Alice) Kanska, Edward (Jeanette) Butsic, Anthony (Mary) Butsic, John and Frank Butsic; mother- and father-in-law Marianne and LeRoy Mattson; and brother-in-law David Larsen.

Larry is survived by his wife, Cindy; his mother, Joyce; brothers, Bill (Jane) Butsic and David (Camille) Butsic; nephews, Van (Lindsey) Butsic, Eric Butsic, and Larry Larsen; nieces, Emily (Bryan) Mercer, Celeste Butsic, and Kym (Brad) Frustaglio; father-in-law, Bruce Larsen; sisters-in-law, Paula (Jim) Ebli and Patti (Mike) Olson; brothers-in-law, Dale (Bonnie) Larsen, Tony (Mary Lou) Larsen, and Larry (Nancy) Larsen; many loving cousins and good friends, Mike Merren and family, Marla Sprague, and Kathy Jabara.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at the American Legion in Norway.
