James “Jimmy” W. Sweig
GILBERT, Ariz. — James “Jimmy” W. Sweig, 86, of Gilbert, passed away Nov. 30, 2017, surrounded by his family.
James was born in January 1931 to the late Earl and Eva (Pieche) Sweig, in Niagara, Wis. He was one of seven children. James moved to Arizona in 1948, where he completed high school at the Phoenix Technical School.
In 1957, he was married to Jeri Jene West.
James started his career at the Valley National Bank, where he retired after 30 years of service as an assistant vice president.
In the late 1950s, Jim and Jeri became members of a small Episcopal congregation that met in a Phoenix storefront. This eventually became St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Phoenix. In 1964, as treasurer of the church, Jim assisted with the build at the current church location. Jim was also an active member in the Phoenix Optimist Club.
His favorite hobbies included fishing, golfing, bowling and spending time at his cabin in Forest Lakes, Ariz. Jim loved the Green Bay Packers, baseball and Arizona State University sports.
He was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Chandler, Ariz.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Valerie; his son, James C. and his wife, Penny; two grandchildren, Amanda and Courtney; his sister, LaVerne; and brother, Tom.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Jeri; and his siblings, Francis, Henrietta, Clarence, and Earl.
Visitation was from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017 at the Legacy Funeral Home, 1374 N. Arizona Ave., Chandler, Ariz.
Services were at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 901 W. Erie St., Chandler.
