Francis J. French
PEMBINE, Wis. — Francis J. French, 84, of Pembine, died Tuesday Jan. 16, 2018, at Evergreen Meadows Assisted Living in Norway. He was born in Norway on Feb. 8, 1933, son of the late Herman and Virginia (Schnabl) French.
He started logging at the age of 16 and later started French Forest Products. At the age of 33, he and his brother Paul decided to build their own peeling operation. It took several months to make and worked very efficiently. In fact it worked so well, paper mills from Green Bay, Wis., came and filmed it running so they could build their own. Little did Francis and Paul know they would change the peeling industry. Francis was an avid outdoorsman. He took many fishing trips to Canada and out west, hunting moose, elk, and even to the Dakotas for pheasants.
Francis is survived by his seven siblings: Rodger French of Pembine, Delores (John) Jacovitch of Rhinelander, Wis., Joan French of Beecher, Wis., Rita Stovenken of Pembine, Judy (Richard) Kallioinen of Ishpeming, Susan (Richard) Braun of Kewaunee, Wis., and Abe (Karen) French of Pembine; and he is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul; and sister, Marie.
