Thanks, Kiwanis Ski Club, for all the hard work

From Theresa Proudfit, staff writer, The Daily News:

Kiwanis Ski Club members are some of the hardest-working, most dedicated volunteers you will ever meet. After covering ski tournaments for almost 20 years I have witnessed the behind-the-scenes preparation involved in hosting a ski jumping tournament. It is a year-long commitment of time, patience and skill that is needed to accommodate the jumpers, entertain the fans and support the community.

The weather this week has made the hill crew’s job more difficult, but nothing stopped them from trying to bring the absolute best conditions to the hill for the jumpers and fans. Warm weather, rain, snow, ice and wind are all factors when trying to prepare the scaffold, landing hill and parking lot for the tournament and we had all that in the past two weeks.

If the community could see first-hand, as I do, all the work that goes into this tournament every year, no one would ever complain about a $20 or $30 button. No matter what the weather is like, these people do everything it takes to put together a great tournament weekend.

Did I happen to mention these are volunteers I’m talking about? Most of whom still buy a button every year. That’s right, even after working year-round, without pay, and then day and night — sometimes on very little sleep — the two weeks before the tournament, many of these individuals still spend $20 to purchase a button. Why? Because they love ski jumps, they love fans and they want to support this awesome event and keep it happening every year.

Very rarely has a tournament been cancelled. Once in a great while the skiers only get to jump one day instead of two. But no matter what happens, the ski club is always doing whatever they have to do to keep the event going.

Thank you, ski club members past, present and future, for your years and years of hard work. You are the best.

Appreciates Angeli’s updates on O’Dette

From Rich Henrion, Norway:

I want to thank Burt Angeli and the Daily News for the Feb. 17 coverage of drag racing and Ryan O’Dette. Ryan was a student for two years in my Auto Technology classes at the Dickinson-Iron Tech Center. I am not surprised at what he has accomplished and where he is at now. He is at the pinnacle of the sport and a pit crew member on one of the very best teams in the nation. The Don Schumacher Papa John’s drag race team is the best of the best. Ryan is living the dream.
