Oktoberfest puts out call for volunteers

Did you celebrate Oktoberfest in 2016 like beer and bratwurst were in your blood, or at least in your belly?

The annual fall celebration, set this year for 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sept. 23 at the intersection of East A and Iron Mountain streets in downtown Iron Mountain, invites all to become German for a day and embrace polka, lederhosen and dirndls.

But such events do not happen without a whole lot of help, according to the Downtown Development Authority.

It takes almost 100 volunteers to make Oktoberfest run like a Bavarian clock, taking tickets, serving up wine and beer or other beverages, even staffing the pretzel station.

And now is the time to step up and make sure Oktoberfest has enough people it can continue to be a success.

The DDA is asking that those who love Oktoberfest consider spending a few hours helping out, perhaps pairing a half-day of service with a half-day of festing.

Or maybe you’re not that into the liquid consumption part but like the other aspects of such events — the people, the music, such feats of skill and strength as the beer stein-holding competition — enough you might enjoy a bigger role in the celebration.

If willing to step in and step up, DDA wants to hear from you.

Go to www.downtownironmountain.com/oktoberfest17. Scroll down to the “Get Involved” section and click on the “Volunteer Sign-Up Form” button. See if one of the six-hour shifts or tasks still available works for you.

The DDA uses proceeds from these events to benefit residents, businesses, developers, historical restoration, art, beautification and local grants. To make that possible, organizers can’t afford to spend on workers. That means whatever you give to Oktoberfest can be viewed as a contribution to the community.

So consider becoming a volunteer for one of Iron Mountain’s most enjoyable events. The Downtown Development Authority and others behind Oktoberfest will say, “Danke schon.”
