Attend services on Memorial Day

Please consider attending a Memorial Day service on Monday. I am not trying to guilt-trip you with this letter; I sincerely hope you want to attend a service. Memorial Day is meant as a day to remember and honor the men and women who died while fighting in our armed services. It is a day to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice that others have given in support of our country.

Regardless of your opinion on war and politics, both past and present, the fact is that you are alive today, and the men and women being remembered are not. You might not personally know anyone who died fighting for our country, but you probably have a friend, a co-worker, a relative, or a neighbor who does know someone being remembered on Memorial Day; your support matters to them. No matter whether or not you have a personal connection to Memorial Day, taking the time out of your holiday to pay tribute to our fallen heroes is time very well spent.

Among other reasons to attend: The typical Memorial Day cemetery service is about 30 to 45 minutes long and in the morning, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the day. The programs take place on the last Monday in May, so the weather is usually not terrible. The settings are peaceful and afford opportunity for reflection.

I hope you attend a Memorial Day service on Monday. Better yet — I hope you make it an annual tradition.
