Some flags need to be retired
EDITOR:
Today, please check out the condition of the United States flag being flown by businesses in this area.
A torn, soiled flag should have been removed immediately and prepared for proper disposal. The damaged flag is not left up until another flag is received as a replacement.
I have made it a point to approach business owners and government offices personally to suggest they might not be aware of the condition of the flag. With one exception, the representative I have spoken to has thanked me for the information and taken immediate action to remove the flag. The one exception continues year after year to fly a tattered flag, even when flying the flag at half-staff.
When we observe Memorial Day with special services, thank veterans for their service and support men and women on active duty, we should also be aware of how we honor the flag of our country.
How can we ignore and/or continue to disrespect veterans who receive services from Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center?
Perhaps, you wouldn’t mind contacting a business or government office to gently offer your suggestion.
Many gave their lives so that we can live under Old Glory! Thank you.
