Community college was a good choice

EDITOR:

I don’t think anyone will argue with this statement: college is incredibly expensive. I realized this while researching colleges during my junior year. So, for the sake of fiscal responsibility, I chose to attend a community college — one of the best decisions that I have ever made.

By studying political science at Lansing Community College, I am saving nearly $30,000 in tuition, room, and board. With scholarships included, I will be nearly debt-free when I graduate with my associates degree. I plan on transferring to a four-year institution after that, and LCC will set me up for financial success.

The perks of attending a community college goes beyond finances, however. I have learned that it provides a nice transition between high school and college. You can have a more flexible schedule, attend classes with fewer students, and receive more of an individualized education.

For example, I scheduled all of my classes on Monday and Wednesday, allowing me to intern with State Senator Tom Casperson on the off days. Interning is extremely beneficial to my future, as it is a great resume builder and gives me real-world experience.

America’s community colleges serve over 9 million students per year, with over 400,000 students in Michigan alone.

From Ironwood to Bloomfield Hills, and everywhere in between, these institutions provide unique opportunities for students from all backgrounds. I would like to encourage all high school graduates to consider this route as they continue their education and begin preparing for a career.
