Be on lookout for fraudulent UIA claims

Due to recent large data breaches from a number of well-known sources, the Unemployment Insurance Agency has seen an increase in criminals using stolen identity information to attempt to illegally obtain benefits. Benefits are legitimately available only to individuals who have lost their jobs — not criminals.

The criminal activity has led to a number of people in Michigan receiving letters from UIA regarding a claim being filed. If anyone receives a letter from UIA that appears to be suspicious, please report on our website at www.michigan.gov/uia or call the Fraud Hotline 855-842-7463.

Recent legislation goes into effect on March 21 that requires notification to employers and victims of the resolution of these investigations.

For individuals, be wary of a UIA letter if you haven’t made a claim for benefits. For a business, if you receive notice of a claim for an employee still working for the company that is a sign of potential identity theft.

UIA has taken a number of steps to stop the criminals from illegally obtaining benefits. Employers and individuals also play a critical role. Please review our TIP sheets, individuals business, on the UIA website to learn more about this issue.

Together we can stop these criminals from getting benefits and ultimately put them in prison for their crimes.
