Supports LaCost for district judge

As an attorney in Michigan — primarily in Iron and Dickinson counties — for nearly 30 years, I support Julie LaCost as the best candidate to serve as 95-B District Court judge.

My experiences with lawyers, judges, court operations — and as colleague and opposing counsel to Julie — led me to this conclusion.

Julie could have taken her talents anywhere after law school, but she moved home to be near her parents and raise her son in the community where she grew up. She worked long hours and took tough cases to build her own successful law practice in two states. She serves her home town, church and state in an array of leadership and volunteer positions.

Julie is persistent, forward-thinking and realistic. She’s compassionate and tough.

As one example, since being appointed judge in February, Judge LaCost recognized the need for Dickinson County to catch up with Iron County and expand Dickinson’s use of a drug and sobriety court. Judge LaCost is identifying grant funding and preparing her court to be proactive toward rehabilitation because she knows that treatment is a long-term solution, and is cheaper than incarceration.

Julie goes the extra mile. With concerns over court budgets a constant issue, Judge LaCost drove to Marquette to take a test and be certified to do her own court recording when necessary. The test was a day after her dad’s funeral — on a Saturday — but Julie is on the alert for ways to use public funds prudently.

The community needs Judge Julie LaCost, whose track record proves she’s ready to lead our District Court with the work ethic, realistic approach to crime, budget efficiencies and forward thinking that will benefit Dickinson and Iron counties.
