Missing the Packer party
June 11, 2012 - Burt Angeli
Congratulations to Tony Walter on his 37 years with the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
Walter, who announced his retirement, was one of the many helpful folks who assisted this “wet behind the ears” intern in the Press-Gazette sports department.
After graduating from St. Norbert College and landing the sports editor’s position with the Iron Mountain News, I ran into Tony at a Green Bay Packer function. I wanted to be there, he evidently did not.
Many years ago, the Packers invited big-time Packer backers along with media from the U.P. and Wisconsin to a Green Bay resort. The day started with Packer head coach Bart Starr fielding some soft questions.
With that out of the way, guests could golf, swim or whatever until the evening meal with open bar. I didn’t miss many of these deals.
Until Tony wrote in the Press-Gazette that it really wasn’t necessary for the Packers to stage this event. The media didn’t need this kind of treatment.
It wasn’t long after the Packers quit hosting this party. Not sure if Tony was the reason but it didn’t help.
