All-Star basketball notes

June 27, 2012 - Burt Angeli
ScuttleBu(r)t ...

Iron River’s Jamie Angeli and Manistique’s Dave Tiglas, who played in the 1980 Class C boys basketball regional final at Northern Michigan University, watched their sons play Saturday in the 27th annual U.P. Sports Hall of Fame All-Star Classic in Saint Ignace.

Former Manistique coach Seb Rubick made mention of the father-son connection and also reminded us that his Emeralds knocked off Coach Kent Meyer’s Wykons to reach the state quarterfinals.

Sault Ste. Marie’s Steve Angeli accounted for 18 points and 10 assists to help the North outscore the South 104-93. His twin brother, Riley, added eight points and five rebounds.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end it (high school basketball career),” said Steve Angeli, who was named most valuable player.

Jamie Angeli, a well-traveled basketball coach now at City College of New York, got a chance to watch his sons play for just the second time.

Tiglas tallied a team-high 19 points with six rebounds.

OTHER STUFF FROM SAINT IGNACE: I’ve been trying to convince Norway star Megan Kangas to continue her basketball career at UW-Oshkosh. It looks like the pre-medicine major will stick to the books in Oshkosh but she does hope to play again in the Gold Medal Classic in Hermansville ...

The Waara cousins did their part for the North girls. Negaunee’s Courtney collected 13 points while West Iron County’s Jaclyn registered 12 points, five steals, three assists and two rebounds ...

Tip of the hat to Denny Grall, Dave Latva and the Ingalls, Doreen and Doug, for a great event ...

Saw history in the making with the South boys exchanging hugs in pre-game introductions. You don’t see that every game with guys from Iron Mountain, Kingsford, North Dickinson, West Iron County in the lineup ...

Note to the Lake Superior State women’s basketball program: You’ve got a good one in Saint Ignace guard Lauren Goldthorpe. She might have displayed the best shooting form of any player — boys or girls ...

Didn’t see anybody on the court that didn’t belong out there. Kudos to the all-stars for staying sharp during the off-season ...
