'Joggin' Jake' passes on 'Paavo Nurmi'
August 15, 2012 - Burt Angeli
Ben Schneider can be mighty thankful that Freddy “Joggin’ Jake” Jacobs wasn’t at Saturday’s Paavo Nurmi in Hurley.
On the other hand, maybe not.
Freddy, an area distance running legend formerly known as “Fast Freddy” and “Steady Freddy,” has slowed down a bit.
“There's been days when I was so slow up in Iron River people in their cars pull over and ask me if ‘I needed a ride,’" Freddy said. “That's when I know I don't look so good.”
Freddy, usually among the runners in the Paavo Nurmi Marathon, plans to run the inaugural marathon in Minocqua, Wis., on Sept. 2. “Paavo Nurmi” was a little too close to Minocqua to run both.
The husband and wife duo of Ben and Candice Schneider of Minneapolis swept Wisconsin’s oldest marathon.
Ben, 28, captured his seventh Paavo Nurmi title in a time of 2 hours, 34 minutes, 50 seconds.6, fastest since Joe Perske in 1996 (2:32.26).
Candice, 27, claimed women’s honors in 3:10.12.6.
